WELCOME TO ABNEL!
Dr. Abigail Koppes, Principal Investigator

Undergraduates Graduate!
Congrats to all of our Undergraduates who have worked in the lab and graduated today! Good luck to them on the next path of their lives.
Dan, Sanjin, and Marissa Graduate!
Congratulations Dr. Dan Ventre, Dr. Sanjin Hosic, and Dr. Marissa Puzan for graduating!
Dan Successfully Defends his Thesis!
Dan Ventre defended his Thesis today titled The Effects of Low Intensity Focused Ultrasonic Stimulation on Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurons and Schwann Cells in Vitro Congratulations Dan!
Minhal wins the Harold D. Hodgkinson Award
Minhal Ahmed was awarded the Harold D. Hodgkinson Award, one of Northeastern University’s highest honors for graduating seniors. Colleges nominate their top students on the basis of academic and experiential performance, and selections are made by a faculty committee Congratulations Minhal!
Sanjin Successfully Defends His Thesis!
Sanjin Hosic defended his Thesis today titled Harnessing Patient-Derived Organoids And Microfluidics To Investigate Cholinergic Regulation Of The Epithelial Barrier. Congratulations Sanjin!
Marissa Successfully Defends her Thesis!
Dr. Marissa Puzan successfully defended her thesis titled, “Investigating Intestinal Epithelial Crosstalk with the Enteric Nervous System: First Steps in the Gut-Brain Connection”.
Minhal Named a Mitchell Scholar
Minhal was named a Mitchell Scholar, Northeastern’s first, where he will pursue his masters under Professor John Cryan at University College Cork.
Dr. Koppes, Sanjin, and Adam Present at 2018 AIChE Annual Meeting
Dr. Koppes gave a plenary talk discussing ABNEL’s work on the gut-brain axis as part of WIC’s 20th Anniversary collection of talks celebrating promoting Women in Chemical Engineering. Conference proceedings can be found here. Sanjin gave a platform talk presenting his work towards developing novel in-vitro microfluidic gut models. Conference proceedings can be found here. […]
Tess, Sanjin, Dan, Marissa, Minhal, Caroline, and Prof. Koppes Present at BMES
Congratulations to Tess, Sanjin, Dan, Marissa, Minhal, and Caroline who presented at BMES!
ABNEL welcomes new PhD students Jessica and Adam!!
ABNEL welcomes Jessica Thompson and Adam Bindas as new PhD students. Jessica comes from University of Iowa (M.S. Biomedical/Medical Engineering) and Adam from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (B.S. Chemical Engineering).
Research in the Advanced Biomaterials for Neuroengineering Laboratory (ABNEL) focuses on neural engineering and the interface between neurons and surrounding tissues. Specifically ABNEL develops novel and transformative devices, biomaterials, and biophysical-based therapies for this aims. Current work centers on the gut, heart, and central/peripheral nervous system.
Please feel free to also visit our sister lab Laboratory for Neuromodulation and Neuromuscular Repair (LNNR)
NEWS
Dr. Koppes was awarded a 2020 CMBE Young Innovator award for the recent paper: Cholinergic Activation of Primary Human Derived Intestinal Epithelium Does Not Ameliorate TNF-α Induced Injury. The paper (first author by lab alumni Sanjin Hosic) was published as part of the eponymous special issue. Congrats Dr. Koppes!
